Case IH 520228-13 - SVC – PVED-CLS Steering Controller: Wheel angle sensor out of range, calibration required

The steering controller is receiving data from the Wheel Angle Sensor that exceeds the previously calibrated maximum left/right points. This typically happens if the sensor loses its calibration, if the vehicle's steering geometry has changed (allowing the wheels to steer further than the calibrated limits), or if the mechanical link integrity of the sensor has been lost.

   Inspect Mechanical Linkage: Physically inspect the Wheel Angle Sensor mounted on the steering axle. Look for bent linkage rods, loose mounting brackets, or a disconnected sensor arm. Mechanical integrity loss is a primary trigger for this code.

   Check Steering Geometry: Verify that the steering stops have not been damaged or recently adjusted, which would allow the wheels to turn past the previously calibrated limits.

   Inspect Wiring: Check the wiring harness and connector at the Wheel Angle Sensor for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.

   Start the tractor and allow the AFS Pro 700 or Pro 1200 display to fully boot up.

   Ensure the hydraulic oil temperature is above 5°C (41°F).

   Navigate to the ISObus diagnostic page or the Steering/Guidance calibration menu on your display.

   Select the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) Calibration procedure.

   Follow the on-screen prompts.

   The standard procedure requires the machine to be moving: Drive forward slowly at 2–6 km/h (1–4 mph). Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left-hand steering lock and press the button on the display to set the left-hand WAS value. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right-hand steering lock and set the right-hand WAS value. Drive the tractor perfectly straight to set the center WAS value.

   Save the calibration.

   If the calibration fails, or if the sensor counts are erratic during the procedure, the Wheel Angle Sensor is internally faulty and must be replaced.

   If replacement is necessary, install the new sensor, adjust the rod length to match the OEM specifications for your specific axle, and repeat the calibration procedure.
