Case IH 520230-25 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Steering valve controller auxiliary device signal disagreement

Issue description

This is a safety cross-check failure. The system detects that the transmit rate or the signal deviation between the primary and redundant signals of the auxiliary steering device (such as an electronic joystick or mini-wheel) is too high.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (e.g., 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac AFS Connect Series
  • Case IH Optum AFS Connect Series

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the steering valve is supplied with sufficient oil flow and check for air in the hydraulic system

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the auxiliary steering device (joystick/mini-wheel) and the PVED-CLS controller for chafing, loose pins, or corrosion

  3. Verify that the software configuration parameters (specifically P3365 & P3366) are correctly set for the specific auxiliary device installed

Repair steps

  1. Bleed the System

Start the tractor and perform the lock-to-lock steering procedure (10 times) to purge any trapped air from the hydraulic steering circuit.

  2. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault code and test the auxiliary steering device. If the code does not return, the issue was likely hydraulic aeration.

  3. Test the Auxiliary Device

If the code returns, use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live data for the primary and redundant signals of the auxiliary joystick/mini-wheel. If one signal drops out or lags significantly behind the other, the auxiliary input device is failing.

  4. Inspect CAN/Signal Lines

Perform a continuity and resistance check on the wiring harness from the auxiliary device to the PVED-CLS controller. Repair any damaged wires.

  5. Recalibrate

If wiring is intact, perform a steering valve controller calibration routine. Note: OEM guidelines state that calibration must be performed on an on-road surface (unpainted concrete or asphalt).

  6. Replace Components

If calibration fails and the auxiliary device signals are verified as good at the connector, the PVED-CLS steering valve controller itself has suffered an internal cross-check failure and must be replaced.
