520236-02 - VCM

Case IH 520236-02 - VCM – UCM: Incorrect controller configuration

Issue description

Incorrect controller configuration, or steering valve ground voltage high.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series Tractors
  • Case IH Steiger Series Tractors
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Flagship Combines (7230, 7240, 7250, 8230, 8240, 8250, 9230, 9240, 9250)

Check the cause

  1. Verify Module Configuration: Check if the UCM was recently replaced, updated, or if the machine's battery voltage dropped significantly, causing the module to lose its parameter settings.

  2. Check Software Compatibility: Ensure the software version flashed to the UCM matches the machine's Product Identification Number (PIN) and installed hardware options (e.g., steering valve type).

  3. Inspect Wiring & Grounds: Inspect the wiring harness between the UCM and the steering valve controller. Look for poor ground connections, corrosion at the pins, or a short to a high-voltage source.

  4. CAN-Bus Communication: Check for accompanying communication fault codes (such as 520228 or 520586) which indicate the UCM is failing to talk to the steering valve controller or wheel angle sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read fault codes

Read all active and stored fault codes to confirm 520236-02 is present in the UCM.

  3. Verify UCM configuration

Navigate to the UCM configuration menu in the EST. Verify that the module's configuration matches the physical hardware installed on the tractor/combine.

  4. Reconfigure and calibrate

If the configuration is incorrect or corrupted, use the EST to reconfigure the UCM parameters and perform any required calibration routines (such as steering angle calibration).

  5. Test ground circuit

If the configuration is correct but the code remains active, use a multimeter to test the ground circuit at the steering valve connector. Repair any shorts to power or clean any corroded ground terminals.

  6. Re-flash UCM software

If a software mismatch is found, re-flash the UCM with the correct software payload for the specific machine PIN.

  7. Clear codes and verify

Clear the fault codes and cycle the key to verify the code does not return.

  8. Replace UCM

If the UCM is internally faulted, fails to accept configuration changes, or continuously outputs high voltage on the ground circuit, replace the UCM.
