Case IH 520238-02 - VCM – UCM (Universal Control Module): Incorrect controller configuration

Issue description

The control module has lost its configuration parameters, has a software mismatch, or is detecting a hardware setup that does not match its programmed configuration.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Tractors
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Flagship Combines (7230, 8230, 9230, 7240, 8240, 9240, 7250, 8250, 9250)
  • Case IH Early Riser Planters (2000 series, 2130, 2140, 2150, 2160)
  • Case IH Puma Series Tractors (140, 150, 165, 175)
  • Case IH WD3 Series II Self-Propelled Windrowers

Check the cause

  1. Check if any new hardware or accessories were recently installed (e.g., a rear window grid heater, new sensors, or optional implement controls) without updating the UCM.

  2. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port to read the ECU failure memory and verify if there are other active faults causing a configuration mismatch.

  3. Use the EST to check the current UCM software version and compare it against the latest factory datasets for the specific machine PIN.

  4. Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors leading to the UCM for corrosion, moisture, or pin damage that could cause data loss or communication errors.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Plug the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) into the machine.

  2. Navigate to UCM

Open the Universal Control Module (UCM) parameters screen.

  3. Update Configuration

If a new component was recently installed, locate the corresponding configuration line in the EST (for example, changing a grid heater setting to "Installed") and save the new setting.

  4. Re-flash / Update Software

If no hardware was changed, the UCM configuration may be corrupted. Use the EST to re-flash the UCM with the correct software payload (e.g., software part numbers 51690151, 51690149, or 35.18.0.0 depending on the machine model).

  5. Perform Calibrations

Once the configuration is pushed, perform any required system calibrations prompted by the EST.

  6. Clear Codes

Restart the machine, cycle the key, and clear the fault code memory.

  7. Module Replacement

If the UCM fails to accept the configuration or the EST cannot communicate with it, the physical module has failed and must be replaced.
