Case IH 520238-14 - VCM – VCM: Incorrect controller configuration
Issue description
The software configuration, firmware version, or hardware setup of the module does not match the expected parameters of the machine's CAN bus network or ISOBUS system. This often occurs when a module is replaced without being properly programmed, when there is a mismatch between the display and the controller firmware, or if an incompatible hardware version is installed.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Patriot 3330
- Patriot 3340
- Patriot 4430
- Patriot 4440
- Steiger
- Magnum
- Maxxum
Check the cause
Verify Hardware Compatibility: Check the physical VCM to ensure it is the correct hardware revision for the machine (e.g., A14 Style VCM without programming connector versus an older A9 Style VCM with a 4-pin Weather Pac connector).
Check Display Configuration: On the Pro700 display, navigate to Diagnostics > Version to confirm that the Virtual Terminal (VT) and Task Controller are recognized by the system.
Verify VT Settings: Navigate to Toolbox > VT > Setup and ensure that 'VT Enabled' is set to 'Yes' and 'VT Compatibility' is set to 'Version 3'.
Inspect Harness Connections: Check the VCM wiring harnesses, CAN bus connections, and terminating resistors for corrosion, bent pins, or open circuits that could cause data parity errors.
Repair steps
Power Cycle and Reset
Turn on the machine and navigate to the display's Toolbox menu. Ensure the Task Controller is set to 'Installed' and the operation mode is set to 'Advanced.' Reboot the display to see if the configuration error clears.
Reconfigure Machine Parameters
If the configuration is incorrect, manually re-enter the correct machine parameters (e.g., Tractor Type, Front/Rear Hitch Offsets, or boom section lengths/nozzle quantities) into the display.
Firmware Flash
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check for firmware mismatches between the VCM and the display. Flash the VCM with the latest firmware to ensure compatibility.
Module Replacement
Manually trip the circuit breaker at the battery to disconnect power. Disconnect the multi-pin harnesses from the VCM. Unbolt the VCM from its mounting bracket. Install the new/compatible VCM and reconnect the harnesses. Re-establish power, connect the EST, and perform the module configuration/calibration procedure.
