Case IH 520239-02 - VCM – UCM (Universal Control Module): Incorrect controller configuration
Issue description
The Universal Control Module (UCM) has an incorrect software configuration, a mismatch in the programmed parameters versus the physical hardware/options installed on the machine, or corrupted Non-Volatile Memory (NVM).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (e.g., 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
- Case IH Steiger / Quadtrac AFS Connect Series
- Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 150, 165, 175, 180-260 CVX)
- Case IH Axial-Flow Flagship Combines (e.g., 7230, 7240, 7250, 8250, 9250)
- Case IH Early Riser 2000 Series Planters
Check the cause
Voltage Check: Check the battery voltage and the power supply connections to the UCM. Low voltage (less than 9.8V) during operation or startup can cause the UCM's Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) to corrupt, triggering a configuration fault.
CAN Bus Scan: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for other active fault codes. If the UCM is missing communication with other modules (like the VCM or Armrest controller), it may flag a configuration error because it cannot verify installed options.
AS-BUILT Verification: Verify the current UCM software version and configuration settings against the machine's factory AS-BUILT data to identify which specific parameter is mismatched.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Access UCM Configuration
Navigate to the UCM configuration screen within the EST.
Reconfigure Parameters
Compare the module's current configuration with the physical options on the tractor (e.g., grid heater presence, PTO options, implement control valves). Re-enter or correct the configuration settings to match the machine's specific build.
Save and Cycle Power
Save the new settings to the UCM. Turn the key off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and restart the machine to verify if the fault code clears.
Re-flash Software
If the code persists or the UCM fails to hold the configuration, use the EST to re-flash the UCM with the latest software payload for that specific Product Identification Number (P.I.N.).
Replace Module
If the software update and reconfiguration fail, the UCM has suffered an internal memory failure and must be replaced.
Program New Module
Install the new UCM, then use the EST to program the correct software and configuration payload. A blank UCM will not function out of the box.
