Case IH 520241-13 - VCM – VCM: Steering valve controller internal fault
Issue description
An internal controller fault indicates a hardware or software failure within the module managing the electrohydraulic steering valve, preventing it from accurately processing steering inputs or communicating on the CAN bus.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Steiger 370 AFS Connect
- Steiger 420 AFS Connect
- Steiger 470 AFS Connect
- Steiger 580 AFS Connect
Check the cause
Ensure the steering valve is supplied with sufficient hydraulic oil flow.
Assure that all air has been bled from the steering system by turning the steering wheel fully left, then fully right, a minimum of 10 times.
Verify that no abnormal noise or vibration occurs when steering.
Check the wiring of the chassis CAN data connection and the related electrical connectors between the ECU and the steering valve for shorts or open circuits.
Repair steps
Relieve hydraulic pressure
Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the steering system before disconnecting any lines.
Disconnect power
Disconnect the battery/power supply to the VCM.
Disconnect harnesses
Disconnect the CAN/electrical harnesses from the steering valve controller and the VCM.
Replace component
Replace the faulty component (VCM or Steering Valve).
Perform calibration
Perform a steering valve calibration routine. Calibration must be performed on an on-road surface (i.e., unpainted concrete or asphalt).
