520242-14 - VCM

Case IH 520242-14 - VCM – VCM: Steering valve controller internal fault

Issue description

Fatal internal hardware or software failure within the steering valve's integrated control unit.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect tractors
  • Steiger series
  • Patriot Sprayers
  • Patriot 3240

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN cable connecting the VCM to the steering valve to ensure it is not disconnected, broken, or short-circuited, and verify the VCM voltage supply to rule out undervoltage causing module drop-off.

  2. Ensure all air has been bled from the steering system by turning the steering wheel fully left and fully right a minimum of 10 times. No abnormal noise or vibration should occur.

  3. Verify the VCM configuration and End-of-Line (EOL) parameters for the steering wheel sensor type to rule out a configuration error mimicking an internal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Inspect Wiring

Physically inspect the harness between the VCM and the EH Steering Valve for chafing or pin damage.

  2. Replace the Controller/Valve

If wiring and voltage are intact and the VCM still reports an internal steering valve controller fault, the internal circuitry of the valve has failed. The electro-hydraulic steering valve assembly (or its bolt-on controller) must be replaced.

  3. System Bleed

After installing the new valve, bleed the hydraulic steering circuit by turning the wheel lock-to-lock at least 10 times.

  4. Calibration

Perform a steering calibration routine. Calibration must be performed on an on-road surface (i.e., unpainted concrete or asphalt) to ensure proper tire friction during the routine.
