Case IH 520243-02 - VCM – UCM: Incorrect controller configuration

Issue description

This fault indicates a software configuration mismatch, a loss of configuration data in the Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), or an internal hardware/software failure within the control module.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect Series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Puma Series (e.g., 180-260 CVX)
  • Steiger Series
  • Axial-Flow Flagship Series (7230, 8230, 9230, 7240, 8240, 9240, 7250, 8250, 9250)
  • Early Riser 2000 Series (2130, 2140, 2150, 2160)

Check the cause

  1. Check for low battery voltage (less than 9.8V) or poor power supply/ground connections to the UCM, which is a primary cause of NVM corruption.

  2. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  3. Check the UCM software version and configuration settings. Verify that the configuration matches the physical hardware installed on the machine (e.g., steering valve controller presence, planter options).

  4. Check the CAN bus communication lines between the UCM and associated sub-controllers (like the Steering Valve Controller - SVC).

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Power Issues

Ensure the machine's battery is fully charged and repair any damaged wiring harness connections to the UCM.

  2. Reconfigure the UCM

Using the EST, navigate to the UCM configuration screen. If the configuration is incorrect or corrupted (default values used), reconfigure the module with the correct dataset for the specific machine options.

  3. Software Update

If the NVM was inadvertently cleared or corrupted, reinstall/update the UCM software using the EST.

  4. Calibration

Perform any necessary calibrations required after a UCM software update (e.g., steering valve calibration, implement control valve calibration).

  5. Verification

Clear the fault codes, cycle the key, and verify the code does not return.

  6. Module Replacement

If the fault persists and indicates a hard internal NVM failure or a steering valve controller internal failure, the UCM (or the specific steering valve controller) must be physically replaced and reprogrammed.
