Case IH 520243-14 - VCM – UCM (Universal Control Module): Incorrect controller configuration
Issue description
The control module has detected a mismatch in its software configuration, vehicle options, or CAN bus network configuration. This typically occurs after a software update, a module replacement, or if the module loses its configuration memory.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum AFS Connect (250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
- Steiger AFS Connect
- Puma Series
- Optum Series
- Axial-Flow Flagship Combines (7240, 8240, 9240, 7250, 8250, 9250)
- Early Riser 2000 Series
Check the cause
Verify recent service history to see if the tractor recently underwent a software update, had a module replaced, or had new implement hardware (like a grid heater or radar) installed.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify whether the UCM or VCM is throwing the code, as they require separate configuration files.
Check CAN bus integrity to ensure there are no active CAN bus communication loss codes (such as 520228-19 or 520228-22) preventing the module from reading the network configuration.
Verify the module's current Vehicle Configuration File (VCF) against the tractor's actual build and options.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Power on machine
Turn the key switch to the ON position (engine off).
Scan network
Open the EST software and perform a full network scan to identify the module logging the 520243-14 code.
Access programming screen
Navigate to the Configuration / Programming screen for the affected UCM or VCM.
Download configuration file
Download the latest Vehicle Configuration File (VCF) from the CNH eTIM / ASIST portal, ensuring it matches the machine's exact Product Identification Number (PIN).
Flash configuration
Flash/Upload the correct configuration file to the module. If a specific hardware option was recently added, manually toggle the setting (e.g., changing line 21 to "Installed") and save the new setting.
Calibrate module
Perform any required calibration procedures for the module.
Cycle power
Cycle the key power (turn the key off, wait 30 seconds for the modules to power down, and turn it back on).
Verify repair
Clear the fault codes and verify that 520243-14 does not return.
