520244-13 - VCM

Case IH 520244-13 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Incorrect controller configuration

Issue description

This condition occurs when the software configuration on the module does not match the machine's physical hardware, network expectations, or when a required calibration/setup procedure has not been completed. It can also be triggered if the module's Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) becomes corrupted due to low voltage or an interrupted software update.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect Series
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Magnum 400
  • Steiger Series
  • Steiger 500
  • Puma Series
  • Puma 180-260 CVX
  • Patriot Sprayers
  • Patriot 3330
  • Patriot 3340
  • Patriot 4430
  • Patriot 4440
  • Early Riser 2000 Series Planters

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage is above 9.8V. Low voltage can cause the UCM/VCM to default to incorrect parameters or corrupt the NVM.

  2. Inspect the power supply connections and CAN bus wiring to the UCM/VCM for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.

  3. Check if any new hardware (e.g., grid heater, implement controllers) was recently installed or removed without updating the controller's software.

  4. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the current software version and check the controller's configuration parameters against the machine's actual build.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Hook up the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Reconfigure the Module

Navigate to the configuration screen for the UCM/VCM. Verify that all hardware options (e.g., transmission type, grid heater presence, PTO options) are correctly set to "Installed" or "Not Installed" to match the physical machine.

  3. Reflash Software

If the configuration parameters are correct but the code persists, the NVM may be corrupted. Use the EST to reinstall/flash the latest UCM/VCM software.

  4. Perform Calibrations

After flashing, perform any required calibrations for the implement control valves, steering, or PTO as prompted by the EST.

  5. Test Operation

Save the new settings, restart the tractor, and test the operation of the machine to ensure the code clears and does not return.

  6. Module Replacement

If the UCM/VCM will not accept the configuration, fails the software update, or the NVM is permanently faulty, the module must be replaced and programmed.
