520244-14 - VCM

Case IH 520244-14 - VCM – UCM / VCM: Incorrect controller configuration

Issue description

The control module has detected a mismatch in its programmed parameters, software version, or hardware configuration compared to what is expected by the tractor's CAN bus network. It essentially means the module does not know how to properly operate the specific options installed on the machine.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage and check the wiring harness connections to the UCM/VCM, as low voltage during startup or poor grounds can cause memory/configuration read errors

  2. Check for any other active CAN communication fault codes to ensure the UCM/VCM can communicate with other modules like the transmission or engine ECU

  3. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and verify the current software version and configuration file loaded on the UCM/VCM against the machine's Product Identification Number (PIN) build record

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the Case IH EST laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Re-flash / Reconfigure

Navigate to the controller programming section. Download the correct, up-to-date configuration file for the specific tractor PIN from the Case IH eTIM (Electronic Service Information) system.

  3. Upload Configuration

Push the correct configuration payload to the UCM/VCM.

  4. Power Cycle

Once the flash is complete, perform a key cycle (turn the ignition off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and turn it back on).

  5. Clear Codes

Clear all inactive fault codes and test machine functions.

  6. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

If the EST fails to communicate with the module, the module refuses to accept the configuration file, or the 520244-14 code returns immediately after a successful flash, the internal memory of the UCM/VCM has failed. The module must be physically replaced and then programmed.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Universal Control Module (UCM) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM)

A new UCM/VCM will arrive 'blank' or with base software. It must be programmed by a dealer using the Case IH EST tool after physical installation, or it will immediately throw configuration faults.
