520245-13 - VCM

Case IH 520245-13 - VCM – VCM: Steering valve controller internal fault

Issue description

Indicates an issue within the EEPROM Auto-Calibration config sector. The controller's internal memory has detected a parameter value that is out of range, an incorrect configuration of EEPROM data, or an incorrect Approval CRC.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger Series (e.g., 370, 420, 440, 450, 500)
  • Magnum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify Voltage and Grounds: Check the power supply and ground connections directly at the steering valve controller. The PVED-CLS requires a stable voltage; voltage drops or spikes can cause EEPROM read/write errors during operation or startup.

  2. Check CAN Communication: Inspect the wiring harness between the VCM and the steering valve for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could interrupt the CAN signal.

  3. Review Display Parameters: Access the AFS Pro display and verify that the steering parameters and machine configurations are set correctly and have not defaulted to out-of-range values.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt Recalibration

Clear the fault code and attempt to perform a full AutoSteer / steering valve calibration procedure through the AFS Pro display. Since FMI 13 indicates an out-of-calibration state, a successful recalibration can sometimes rewrite the correct parameters to the EEPROM.

  2. Software Flash / Update

If calibration fails or the code immediately returns, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check for any available software updates for both the VCM and the PVED-CLS steering controller. Reflash the controllers to overwrite any corrupted software or CRC errors.

  3. Replace the Controller/Valve

If flashing and recalibration do not resolve the issue, the EEPROM memory inside the steering valve controller has suffered a hard internal failure. The PVED-CLS controller (or the entire steering valve assembly, depending on how it is serviced for your specific model) must be replaced.

  4. Post-Repair Calibration

After installing the new steering valve/controller, you must perform a complete hydraulic steering calibration and Auto-Calibration procedure before returning the machine to service.
