Case IH 520249-25 - VCM – VCM: Internal failure in the steering valve controller

The controller managing the hydraulic steering valve has detected an internal software/hardware fault or an irreconcilable signal error that prevents it from safely operating the steering system.

   Check the current software version of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) to ensure they are not outdated or corrupted (version 2.02 is the standard baseline).

   Verify the CAN bus communication lines between the VCM/UCM, the steering valve controller, and the wheel angle sensor for abnormal update rates or missing messages.

   Inspect the harness connecting the steering valve controller to the main vehicle control module for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins, and ensure the controller is receiving proper voltage and ground.

   Verify if any aftermarket or secondary autoguidance equipment is plugged into the steering system and temporarily disconnect it to see if the code clears (checking for signal mismatch).

   Flash/Update Software

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Flash the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) to the latest software version (e.g., v2.02 or newer).

   Clear Codes and Test

   Clear the fault codes and cycle the key. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to see if the 520249-25 code returns.

   Replace the Controller/Valve

   If the code returns immediately and wiring has been ruled out, the internal fault is a hard hardware failure. The steering valve controller (often integrated into or mounted directly on the steering valve assembly) must be replaced.

   Calibration

   After replacing the steering valve controller, use the EST to perform a full steering system calibration, including the wheel angle sensor and the advanced steering configuration dataset (Dataset Part Number: 51573865).
