520326-09 - ITBV

Case IH 520326-09 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Controller: Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller

Issue description

The SPN 520326 is a manufacturer-assignable code used by CNH for the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV). The FMI 09 indicates an "Abnormal Update Rate" or a CAN message timeout. This means the main Vehicle Controller has lost CAN bus communication with the ITBV module, or the data packets are not being received within the expected timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 180
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 200
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 220
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 240
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 250
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 280
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 310
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 340
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 380

Check the cause

  1. Check the cab fuse panel for blown fuses related to the ITBV, specifically Fuse F-030 (10 A) and the 15 A fuses for the Pneumatic Trailer brake controller.

  2. Verify if other CAN messages are missing or if other modules are reporting communication faults to rule out a main CAN backbone failure.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the ITBV and the Vehicle Controller for physical damage, open circuits, or short circuits to ground.

  4. Verify the ground reference of the machine and the specific ground pin at the ITBV connector.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Safely park the machine, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  2. Access the ITBV

Locate the ITBV module (typically mounted near the rear axle/trailer brake air reservoirs).

  3. Connector Inspection

Disconnect the main wiring harness to the ITBV. Inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture ingress. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Voltage & Ground Test

Turn the battery switch back on and turn the key to the ON position. Use a multimeter to verify that the ITBV connector is receiving both switched and unswitched battery voltage (12V) and has a solid ground.

  5. CAN Bus Test

With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the ITBV connector. You should see approximately 60 ohms. If you see 120 ohms, there is an open circuit in the CAN wiring between the ITBV and the rest of the network.

  6. Replace and Calibrate

If power, ground, and CAN continuity are all verified as good, the ITBV module has suffered an internal failure. Replace the ITBV ECU. Note: Installing a new ITBV ECU will require the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0) and configure the trailer brake settings.
