Case IH 520327-09 - ITBV – Vehicle Controller: Trailer brake controller communication fault with vehicle controller

The main vehicle controller is not receiving the expected CAN (Controller Area Network) messages from the ITBV module within the required timeframe. This means the tractor has lost electronic communication with the pneumatic trailer brake system.

   Check Power Supply (Fuses): Check the fuse panel for blown fuses, specifically the 15 A fuse for the ITBV switched battery power supply and the 15 A fuse for the ITBV permanent battery power supply.

   Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness running from the cab controller to the ITBV module for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or severe corrosion in the connector pins.

   Test the CAN Bus: Use a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the ITBV connector. Verify that network resistance is correct (typically 60 ohms across the bus with the battery disconnected) and check for shorts to ground or power.

   Verify Grounds: Ensure the ground strap/wire for the ITBV is clean and securely fastened to the chassis.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Fuse Replacement

   If either of the 15A ITBV fuses are blown, replace them. If they blow immediately upon key-on, trace the power wire for a short to ground.

   Harness Repair

   If the CAN lines or power/ground wires are damaged, cut out the damaged section and solder/heat-shrink new wiring. Clean any corroded pins in the ITBV connector using electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring harness, CAN bus resistance, power, and ground all test perfectly but the communication fault remains active, the ITBV module has failed internally.

   Install New ITBV

   Unbolt the faulty ITBV module, disconnect the pneumatic lines (mark them for correct reassembly), and install the new valve assembly.

   Relearn/Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Depending on the exact model, a dealer electronic service tool (EST) may be required to clear the codes and calibrate the new ITBV to the vehicle controller.
