Case IH 5204 – Universal Control Module (UCM): Left Joystick Right-Left Axis In-Range Fault

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the left joystick's right-left (side-to-side) axis sensor that falls within the normal electrical operating limits, but the signal is illogical. This typically occurs when the dual redundant sensors inside the joystick disagree with each other, the joystick mechanism is physically failing to return to the exact neutral deadband, or there is a high-resistance connection skewing the voltage.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Physical Inspection: Ensure the left joystick physically returns to the center neutral position smoothly and is not binding due to dirt, debris, or a broken internal return spring.

  2. Wiring & Connector Check: Remove the left armrest/console cover and inspect the wiring harness connector at the base of the left joystick. Look for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  3. Circuit Testing: Check the specific circuits for the Right-Left axis (identified in schematics as Pin A and Pin B) for high resistance or partial shorts to the chassis.

  4. Live Data Monitoring: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop. Monitor the live voltage or percentage data for the Left Joystick Right-Left axis. If the values are erratic, jumping around without moving the stick, or stuck off-center while the stick is physically centered, the joystick sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Joystick

Remove the protective boot and the mounting hardware for the left-hand control console/armrest.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the main electrical harness connector from the bottom of the left joystick. Unbolt the joystick base from the console bracket and remove the unit.

  4. Installation

Mount the new left joystick assembly into the console and secure the bolts. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Reassembly

Reinstall the console covers, protective boot, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

You must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform the 'Left Joystick Calibration' procedure. This teaches the UCM the exact minimum, maximum, and neutral voltage values of the new joystick. The machine will not operate correctly until this calibration is successfully completed.
