520434-03 - BCM

Case IH 520434-03 - BCM – BCM: Alternator feedback - out of range - high

Issue description

Voltage or signal on the alternator's feedback/sense circuit is measuring higher than the expected normal operating range. This is typically caused by a short to battery voltage in the wiring harness, a failed internal voltage regulator causing the alternator to overcharge, or a software/hardware glitch within the control module.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. With the engine running, perform an alternator output test using a multimeter to check for excessively high voltage (over 15 volts), which indicates a failed internal voltage regulator.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the alternator and the BCM for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or corrosion that could cause the feedback wire to short to a high-voltage source (battery positive).

  3. Verify the BCM software version, as Case IH has issued Program Improvement Programs (PMP) for BCM 12V software updates to resolve erroneous module faults.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Safely park the tractor, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Inspect and Test Wiring

Disconnect the harness at the alternator and at the BCM. Use a multimeter to test the feedback circuit for continuity and check for a short to power. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors.

  3. Test/Replace Alternator

If the wiring is intact but the alternator was overcharging during the diagnostic phase, remove the drive belt, unbolt the alternator, and install a replacement unit.

  4. Update/Replace BCM

If the alternator and wiring are both functioning perfectly, the BCM may be internally shorted or require a software flash. Consult a Case IH dealer to flash the BCM to the latest software version. If the module has suffered a hardware failure (often caused by electrical feedback loops), replace the BCM.

  5. Reassembly and Clearing Codes

Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Start the tractor, verify the charging voltage is within normal limits (approx. 13.5V - 14.4V), and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 520434-03 fault code.
