Case IH 520438-03 - BCM – BCM: Field light memory 1 recall indicator - short circuit to B+
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit responsible for illuminating the "Field Light Memory 1" indicator on the switch panel is receiving unintended battery positive voltage (B+). This is typically caused by a chafed wire touching a 12V power source, a melted connector, or an internal short within the switch itself.

Check the cause
Verify the Code: Confirm the active fault code on the AFS Pro 1200 operator display terminal.
Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the BCM to the cab switch panel. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the cab frame, or melted insulation that could cause the indicator wire to touch a 12V power wire.
Connector Check: Disconnect the Field Light Memory Recall Switch and inspect the connector terminals for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins that could bridge the indicator circuit to a power circuit.
Multimeter Testing: With the switch disconnected and the battery on, use a multimeter to probe the indicator wire on the harness side. If it reads 12V without the switch engaged, the short is in the wiring harness. If it reads 0V, the short is likely internal to the switch.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and engage the manual battery disconnect/isolator switch to cut power to the BCM and prevent further electrical damage.
Access the Switch Panel
Carefully remove the trim panels in the cab to access the rear of the lighting control switches.
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the Field Light Memory Recall Switch.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, trace the wire back toward the BCM. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using OEM-approved sealed connectors. If the terminal at the switch connector is melted, depin and replace the terminal.
Replace the Switch (If Applicable)
If the wiring harness tests fine, the internal circuitry of the switch has failed. Remove the old switch from the bezel and snap the new OEM switch into place.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the switch, reassemble the cab trim, and turn the battery isolator back on. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and use the AFS Pro 1200 display (or dealer diagnostic tool) to clear the inactive 520438-03 fault code. Test the field light memory functions to ensure the indicator operates normally.
