520443-03 - BCM

Case IH 520443-03 - BCM – BCM: Short circuit to B+ on the right roof-mounted high beam headlamp circuit

Issue description

A "Short circuit to B+" (Battery Positive) means that the wire or component is receiving a direct connection to battery voltage when it should not. This indicates an electrical fault where the circuit is permanently closed to power, which can cause the component to stay on continuously or cause the control module to register an incorrect voltage state.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • AFS Connect Magnum series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • Axial-Flow Combines (7120, 8120, 9120, 7230, 8230, 2144, 2388, 2577, 2588)
  • Cotton Pickers (CPX420, CPX610, CPX620)

Check the cause

  1. Check battery condition and voltage, as a weak or failing battery can cause spurious electrical faults across modules.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the BCM to the right roof-mounted headlamp for damaged, crushed, or disconnected lines.

  3. Inspect plug connections at the headlamp and the BCM for correct engagement, damaged connector housings, water ingress, contact corrosion, crimped cables, or pushed-back/bent pins.

  4. Using a multimeter, test the control line to the right high beam headlamp for a short circuit to B+ (battery positive).

  5. Test the headlamp assembly itself to see if the internal wiring is shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before working on the electrical system.

  2. Access the Headlamp

Access the right roof-mounted headlamp assembly on the cab roof and disconnect the harness connector.

  3. Clean/Repair Connectors

If water ingress or contact corrosion is found at the connector, clean the contacts or replace the connector housing.

  4. Repair the Harness

Trace the wiring harness from the roof headlamp back to the BCM. Repair or splice any sections of the wire that are chafed, pinched, or shorting directly to a power source.

  5. Replace the Headlamp

If the wiring tests fine but the headlamp has an internal short circuit, replace the right roof headlamp assembly.

  6. Address the BCM

If the wiring and headlamp are both functioning correctly, the fault may lie within the Body Control Module itself (internal short). The BCM may need to be replaced or reprogrammed.

  7. Verify Repair

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and test the high beam function to verify the short circuit has been resolved.
