520446-03 - BCM

Case IH 520446-03 - BCM – BCM: Roof mounted headlamp low beam right - short circuit to B+

Issue description

The control module is detecting unexpected battery voltage (B+) on the output circuit for the right-hand roof-mounted low beam headlight. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness chafing against a live power wire, a melted connector, or an internal short within the headlamp assembly itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Turn on the headlights and observe the right roof-mounted low beam to see if it is stuck on, flickering, or completely dead.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the right roof-mounted headlamp connector. Inspect the terminals for water ingress, corrosion, or melted plastic bridging the pins.

  3. Harness Voltage Test: With the headlight switch turned off, use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage on the headlamp's supply wire. If 12V (battery voltage) is present, there is a short to power in the wiring harness.

  4. Harness Routing Inspection: Trace the cab roof wiring harness from the headlamp back toward the BCM. Look for pinch points, chafed insulation, or areas where the wire might be rubbing against a constant power source.

  5. Component Test: If the harness tests normal, the short circuit to B+ may be internal to the headlamp assembly's circuitry (especially common in LED assemblies).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the Headlamp

Remove the retaining screws or roof bezel securing the right roof-mounted headlamp.

  3. Isolate the Fault

    Disconnect the headlamp assembly.

  4. Repair the Wiring

If your diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, locate the chafed section. Cut out the damaged wire, solder in a new section of automotive-grade wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink. If the roof harness is severely melted, replace the affected harness sub-assembly.

  5. Replace the Headlamp

If the wiring is intact and the short is internal to the lamp, install a new right-hand headlamp assembly.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the headlamp pigtail, mount the light back into the roof housing, and secure the bezel.

  7. Test and Clear

Reconnect the battery. Turn on the tractor's ignition, clear the BCM fault codes using the diagnostic display, and test the headlight operation to verify the short circuit is resolved.
