Case IH 520525-05 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Controller: Inlet valve current low

The system has detected an interruption, open circuit, or abnormally low current draw in the electrical circuit for the pneumatic trailer brake's inlet valve.

• Case IH Farmall models (with Cab and CVT transmissions)

   Verify the fuses powering the ITBV system (e.g., Fuse F-030, 10A for the ITBV UNSW B+ circuit) are intact

   Disconnect the harness at the valve and measure the resistance from the Inlet valve pin to Ground (should read between 4.0 and 9.0 ohms for a 12V system)

   Measure the resistance at the ECU harness pins with the modulator valve connected (should read 4.0 - 9.0 ohms with no more than a 1 ohm difference from the direct valve measurement)

   Test the ECU harness by itself for continuity to battery voltage or ground (there should be no continuity/shorts)

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the ITBV

   Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) assembly and the associated pneumatic solenoid valve block (typically mounted near the rear axle or trailer air connections).

   Inspect Connections

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the inlet valve solenoid. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Test the Solenoid

   Perform the multimeter resistance test on the inlet valve coil (as outlined in the diagnostic checks). If the coil reads outside the 4.0 - 9.0 ohm range (e.g., infinite resistance indicating an open internal coil), the ITBV solenoid valve assembly is faulty and must be replaced.

   Test the Harness

   If the valve coil is within specification, the fault lies in the wiring. Trace the wiring harness back to the ITBV ECU, checking for broken wires, pinch points, or chafing. Repair any damaged wiring.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the harness securely and restore battery power.

   Clear and Verify

   Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault codes from the ITBV module. Test the pneumatic trailer brake system to ensure the code does not return and the brakes actuate properly.
