Case IH 520527-05 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control module (iTBV): Solenoid Valve/Diff-Valve (Trailer ABV) - current below normal or open circuit.

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical interruption (open circuit) at the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) solenoid actuator. The controller detects this interruption in both active and inactive states, with a detection time of 200 milliseconds. This means the electrical circuit to the trailer brake solenoid is broken, disconnected, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the parameter settings in the ECU to ensure the trailer brake valve/actuator is correctly configured as 'equipped'.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness of the ITBV solenoid valve for obvious physical interruptions, chafing, or disconnected plugs.

  3. Check the harness by itself for any shorts to the battery or shorts to ground (should show no continuity to DC voltage or ground).

  4. Measure the resistance between the sensor/valve leads directly at the component, then at the ECU harness pins. A difference of more than 1 ohm indicates a broken wire or severely corroded connector.

  5. Check the solenoid valve itself for an internal open circuit by measuring for infinite resistance across the coil pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and bleed any residual air/hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake lines for safety.

  2. Locate the ITBV

    Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly, typically mounted near the rear chassis valve block or trailer brake couplers.

  3. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the electrical connector at the ITBV Solenoid Valve. Inspect the pins on both the harness and the valve for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Clean if necessary.

  4. Test the Solenoid

    Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid valve. If the multimeter reads "OL" (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the solenoid coil has failed internally.

  5. Test the Harness

    If the valve tests within normal resistance specifications, use the multimeter to check for continuity on the wiring harness between the valve connector and the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) ECU connector.

  6. Repair/Replace

    If the harness has a broken wire, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged section. If the solenoid valve has an internal open circuit, replace the ITBV Solenoid Valve assembly.

  7. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect all plugs, turn the ignition on, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the 520527-05 fault code. Actuate the trailer brakes to ensure the fault does not return and the system functions correctly.
