520527-06 - ITBV

Case IH 520527-06 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) Module: ITBV: Back up valve current high

Issue description

The backup solenoid valve circuit is experiencing "current high". The system has detected a short circuit to battery voltage (UB) or a short to ground (GND) at the relevant actuator in either its active or inactive state.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Case IH Puma series

Check the cause

  1. Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness connecting the ITBV ECU to the backup solenoid valve. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could be causing a short circuit to ground or to another power wire.

  2. Actuator/Solenoid Test: Disconnect the connector at the backup valve and measure the internal resistance of the solenoid coil using a multimeter. An out-of-spec or near-zero reading indicates an internal short circuit within the valve itself.

  3. Voltage Supply Check: Verify the voltage supply of the vehicle at the module to ensure the battery or voltage governor is not defective and sending overvoltage to the circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Circuit

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Access the ITBV Assembly

Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly (typically mounted near the rear pneumatic reservoirs/trailer brake couplers).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Valve

If the backup valve solenoid tested as internally shorted, remove the pneumatic lines and electrical connector from the backup valve. Unbolt the faulty valve from the ITBV manifold and install the replacement part.

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the pneumatic lines and electrical harness. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 520527-06 fault code. Perform a functional test of the trailer brake system to ensure the code does not return.
