Case IH 520551-06 - BCM – BCM: Right extended arm turn indicator - short circuit to ground

A short circuit to ground condition occurs when a wire or component in the right extended arm turn indicator circuit unintentionally makes electrical contact with a ground source (such as the tractor's chassis or a ground wire), causing excessive current draw and preventing the light from functioning properly.

   Visually inspect for dirt, rust, or corrosion deposited on the BCM connectors or the turn indicator lamp connectors.

   Verify the physical connection of the BCM connector and the mating connector at the right extended arm turn indicator.

   Turn off the ignition and unplug the BCM connector as well as the right extended arm turn indicator lamp to isolate the harness.

   With both ends disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the turn indicator signal wire and a known chassis ground. If continuity exists, the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

   Trace the wiring harness between the BCM and the right extended arm turn indicator. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the frame, or unauthorized splices that are not mentioned in the circuit schematics.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Disconnect Components

   Unplug the harness from the BCM and the right extended arm turn indicator.

   Repair the Harness

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring, locate the chafed or pinched section of the harness. Repair the damaged wire using proper splicing techniques and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

   Component Replacement

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine (no short to ground), the short is likely internal to the right extended arm turn indicator lamp assembly itself. Replace the lamp assembly. (In rare cases, if the output pin on the BCM is internally shorted, the BCM would require replacement).

   Reassembly and Verification

   Reconnect the BCM and the turn indicator lamp. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and operate the right turn signal to verify the fault code is cleared and the indicator flashes correctly.
