Case IH 520561-00 - BCM – BCM: Rear windshield washer motor circuit - too many loads or faulty load

Issue description

An overcurrent condition on the rear windshield washer motor circuit. The control module has detected that the electrical current draw exceeds the maximum allowable threshold, typically caused by a short circuit to ground, a seized/internally shorted washer pump motor, or a stalled motor from frozen fluid or a clogged line.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Blockages: Verify that the rear washer nozzles and fluid lines are not clogged with dirt or frozen solid. A blocked line will cause the pump to deadhead and spike the electrical current.

  2. Isolate the Motor: Disconnect the electrical connector at the rear washer pump. Clear the codes and activate the rear washer switch. If the code changes to an 'Open Circuit' fault, the wiring is fine, and the pump motor is internally shorted/faulty. If the 'too many loads' code returns while the pump is unplugged, there is a short to ground in the wiring harness between the BCM and the pump.

  3. Inspect the Wiring: Trace the wiring harness from the washer pump back to the cab/BCM. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing against the tractor frame.

  4. Direct Power Test: Apply 12V directly to the disconnected washer pump using a fused jumper wire. If the pump fails to spin, sounds terrible, or immediately blows your inline fuse, the pump is dead.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the BCM from accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Pump

    Access the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Depending on the tractor model, the rear washer pump is usually mounted directly into the bottom or side of the reservoir tank (often sitting right next to the front washer pump).

  3. Drain the Fluid

    Place a catch pan under the reservoir.

  4. Remove the Pump

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the pump. Carefully pull the rubber fluid hose off the pump nipple. Pull the pump straight out of the rubber grommet in the reservoir tank.

  5. Install the New Pump

    Lubricate the new rubber grommet with a little soapy water and press it into the tank. Push the new washer pump firmly into the grommet until it seats.

  6. Reconnect

    Reattach the fluid hose and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Test

    Refill the reservoir with washer fluid. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and test the rear washer. Clear the stored fault codes from the BCM using the tractor's diagnostic display or a scan tool.
