520569-03 - BCM

Case IH 520569-03 - BCM – BCM: Map lamp - short circuit to B+

Issue description

The control circuit for the cab's interior map lamp (reading light) is receiving unintended battery voltage (B+). This is typically caused by a pinched or chafed wire in the headliner harness touching a constant 12V power source, or an internal short within the lamp assembly or switch itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect Series

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check if the map lamp is stuck "ON" regardless of switch position, or if the bulb is blown/melted.

  2. Isolate the Component: Carefully pry out the map lamp assembly from the headliner/C-post and disconnect its electrical connector (often designated as connector X-717 for the Right C Post Map Lamp).

  3. Circuit Testing: With the lamp disconnected and the switch in the "OFF" position, use a digital multimeter to probe the harness-side connector. If 12V is present on the switched/control wire, the short to B+ is in the wiring harness.

  4. Switch Continuity: Test the map lamp switch for internal continuity faults. Check for continuity between the switch terminals to ensure it isn't internally fused closed.

  5. Harness Inspection: Inspect the headliner wiring harness, paying close attention to areas where the harness routes past sharp metal cab structures, mounting brackets, or headliner retaining screws.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent further electrical damage or blown fuses during the repair.

  2. Access the Lamp

Remove the map lamp bezel from the cab headliner or right-hand C-post.

  3. Remove the Assembly

Pull the map lamp assembly down and disconnect the wiring harness. Inspect the connector pins for signs of arcing, melting, or corrosion.

  4. Trace and Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks pointed to a harness short, drop the necessary sections of the headliner to trace the wire back toward the BCM. Locate the pinched or chafed section of the wire. Cut out the damaged section, splice in a new piece of wire using heat-shrink butt connectors, and wrap the harness in anti-chafing tape.

  5. Replace Components

If the short is internal to the lamp assembly (e.g., melted contacts bridging the power and ground circuits), replace the entire map lamp assembly.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the map lamp, snap the bezel back into place, and reconnect the battery. Turn the key on, verify the map lamp operates correctly via the switch, and use the AFS Pro display (or a diagnostic tool) to clear the inactive 520569-03 BCM fault code.
