Case IH 520578-06 - BCM – Body Control Module (BCM): Battery isolator reset - short circuit to ground
Issue description
The fault indicates a "short circuit to ground" within the battery isolator circuit. This means that the electrical current intended for the battery isolator relay or switch is finding an unintended path directly to the chassis ground, bypassing the normal load. This typically results in blown fuses, failure of the isolator to engage/disengage, or a continuous battery drain.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum Series: 180, 200, 220, 240, 235, 250, 260, 280, 290, 310, 340, 370, 380 (including AFS Connect models)
- Steiger Series: 385, 435, 535
- Puma Series: 115 through 225
- Maxxum Series: 100, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 140
- Farmall Series: 55A through 120A, 65C through 95C, 95U, 105U, 115U
Check the cause
Switch OFF the power supply (ignition key in the OFF position) before disconnecting any electrical connectors.
Use a multimeter to perform a continuity test on the wiring harness between the BCM and the battery isolator relay/switch. Check for continuity between the signal wire and the chassis ground.
Inspect the wiring harness, connectors, and switches for chafing, melted insulation, or physical damage that could cause the wire to touch the tractor's frame.
Disconnect the battery isolator switch/relay. If the short to ground disappears from the harness side, the internal coil of the isolator relay/switch is shorted and the component must be replaced.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Completely disconnect the main battery cables to ensure safety and prevent static electricity build-up or sparks.
Access the Isolator
Locate the battery isolator switch or relay (typically mounted near the battery box or main electrical distribution panel).
Harness Repair (if applicable)
If the diagnostic continuity test revealed a chafed wire in the harness, cut out the damaged section, splice in a new section of appropriately gauged wire, solder, and seal with heat-shrink tubing.
Replace the Isolator
If the isolator itself is internally shorted, unbolt the heavy-duty battery cables and the smaller BCM control wires from the terminals.
Install New Component
Mount the new OEM battery isolator. Reconnect the control wires and the main battery cables, ensuring all connections are clean and torqued to specification.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and use the diagnostic tool to clear the BCM fault code. Test the isolator function to ensure the short circuit is resolved.
