Case IH 520584-05 - BCM – BCM: Left brake indicator light - open circuit

Issue description

The electrical path to the left brake indicator light has been broken. The controller is sending voltage to the circuit but is not detecting the expected electrical load. This is most commonly caused by a blown light bulb, a disconnected wiring harness, a broken wire, or a corroded connector pin.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Remove the left brake indicator lens and visually inspect the bulb filament for a blown bulb

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness at the left brake light assembly and inspect the pins for green corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pins that have backed out of the plastic connector housing

  3. Using a digital multimeter, check for 12V at the positive pin of the light connector while an assistant presses the brake pedal

  4. Verify that the ground wire for the left tail/brake light assembly has good continuity to the chassis ground

  5. Trace the wiring harness from the left brake light back toward the BCM, looking for pinch points, rub-throughs, or severed wires (especially near the cab pivot points or rear fenders)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Access the Bulb

Remove the retaining screws holding the left brake indicator light lens or housing in place.

  3. Replace the Bulb

If the bulb is blown or tests open with a multimeter, remove it and install a new OEM-spec bulb.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the bulb is good but voltage is not reaching the socket, locate the break in the wiring harness. Splice and solder the broken wire, then seal it with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  5. Clean Contacts

If the connector is corroded, clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply a small amount of dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  6. Reassemble and Clear

Reinstall the light housing and lens. Turn the tractor's ignition on, press the brake pedal to verify illumination, and check the AFS Pro display to ensure the BCM has moved the fault code from 'Active' to 'Stored/Inactive'.
