Case IH 520584-06 - BCM – BCM: Short circuit to ground in the left brake indicator light circuit

The control module has detected that the voltage on the control wire for the left brake light is dropping to zero unexpectedly (finding a path to ground before reaching the load) or that the circuit is drawing excessive current, typically due to a chafed wire touching the machine's frame or an internally shorted bulb.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the left brake light for damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires.

   Remove the left brake indicator light bulb and inspect it to see if the filament has melted across the contacts, causing an internal short.

   Disconnect the connector at the BCM and the connector at the left brake light assembly. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the signal/power wire and the chassis ground. If continuity to ground is displayed while both ends are unplugged, the wiring harness is shorted against the frame.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first to prevent further electrical damage or sparks.

   Replace the Bulb

   If the diagnostic checks revealed an internally shorted left brake light bulb, replace it with a new one.

   Trace and Repair the Harness

   If the multimeter test showed a short in the harness, trace the wire routing along the frame (pay special attention to pinch points or areas where the harness bends).

   Fix the Wire

   Once the chafed wire is located, repair the short circuit by splicing the wire and sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section entirely.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the BCM and the left brake light connectors.

   Restore Power

   Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the terminals securely.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key switch to the ON position, test the left brake light operation, and use a service diagnostic tool (such as the Electronic Service Tool) to erase the previously active fault codes from the BCM.
