520586-00 - BCM

Case IH 520586-00 - BCM – BCM: Trailer left turn indicator - too many loads or faulty load

Issue description

The control module has detected an overcurrent condition on the trailer's left turn signal circuit. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring, a corroded trailer socket, or the trailer having too many incandescent bulbs drawing more amperage than the circuit's maximum threshold allows.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the tractor from the trailer by disconnecting the 7-pin trailer socket, clearing the fault code, and activating the left turn signal. If the code does not return, the fault is in the trailer.

  2. Inspect the tractor's 7-pin receptacle for water ingress, heavy corrosion, or bent pins (specifically the left turn pin) that could be bridging the circuit to ground.

  3. Check the trailer load: calculate the total amperage draw if the trailer has multiple incandescent bulbs on the left turn circuit to ensure it does not exceed the module's limit.

  4. Inspect the tractor's wiring harness from the BCM to the rear trailer socket for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper shorting against the chassis.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Address the Socket

If the 7-pin trailer socket is heavily corroded or internally shorted, unbolt it from the mounting bracket, disconnect the wiring terminals, and install a new socket. Ensure the weather seal/boot is intact to prevent future water ingress.

  3. Repair Wiring

If a short is found in the tractor or trailer wiring harness, cut out the damaged section, splice in new wire using marine-grade heat-shrink butt connectors, and wrap the repair in protective wire loom.

  4. Reduce Circuit Load

If the trailer wiring is healthy but the code trips due to 'too many loads,' replace the trailer's incandescent left turn bulbs with LED bulbs. LEDs draw significantly less current and will prevent the BCM from triggering the overcurrent fault.

  5. Verify Repair

Reconnect the battery, plug the trailer back into the tractor, and operate the left turn signal to verify the fault code 520586-00 remains inactive.
