520591-03 - BCM

Case IH 520591-03 - BCM – BCM: Backup alarm - short circuit to B+

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the machine's reverse/backup alarm has shorted to battery voltage (B+), meaning the circuit is receiving unintended power, likely due to a wiring fault or internal component failure.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
  • Case IH Puma (Models 200, 215, 230)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the battery case for damage, clean the battery terminals, and ensure all connections are tight to rule out erratic voltage spikes.

  2. Trace the backup alarm wiring harness (often routed near the rear combination lamps) and inspect for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the circuit to short to a 12V power source.

  3. Disconnect the backup alarm buzzer and use a multimeter to check if the short to B+ is present on the harness side or if the internal circuitry of the alarm itself has failed and shorted.

  4. Check the backup alarm control switch/sensor and its connection cable for erratic signals or internal shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery via the battery isolator to prevent further electrical damage or accidental shorts during repair.

  2. Locate the Fault

Based on your diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of the short circuit. This is typically found in the rear wiring harness leading to the backup alarm.

  3. Repair the Harness

If the wiring harness is damaged and shorting to a power wire, cut out the damaged section, splice in new wiring using weather-sealed connectors, and re-wrap the harness securely to prevent future chafing.

  4. Replace the Alarm (if necessary)

If the wiring is intact but the backup alarm unit itself has internally shorted, unbolt the old alarm, disconnect the pigtail, and install a replacement OEM backup alarm.

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and place the machine in reverse to verify that the backup alarm sounds correctly and that the 520591-03 fault code clears from the BCM/display.
