Case IH 520645-31 - VCM – VCM: Transmission control lever position switch disagreement

The transmission controller is receiving conflicting, illogical, or simultaneous signals from the transmission control lever (also known as the shuttle lever, gear selector switch, or FNRP pod). For example, the switch inputs might indicate that the lever is in both Forward and Neutral, or Park and Reverse at the same time.

   Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position (engine not running) and watch the shuttle position/gear display on the instrumentation controller.

   Move the transmission control lever through all positions (Park, Neutral, Forward, Reverse) and verify if the display matches the physical lever position. If the Forward icon is lit when physically in Park or Neutral, the Forward switch has likely failed closed or shorted. If the 'P' icon does not come on or is slow, suspect a secondary issue in the park brake hydraulic system.

   Cycle the shuttle lever rapidly a few times; this can sometimes temporarily free up stuck micro-switches inside the pod.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission control lever to the VCM/transmission controller. Look for rubbed wires, shorts to ground/power, or loose connector pins.

   Park the tractor on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Ensure the machine is safely parked before beginning the repair.

   Remove the steering wheel to gain unobstructed access to the column.

   This provides clear access to the steering column components.

   Remove the plastic steering column covers/panels surrounding the instrument and steering panel.

   Take off the covers to expose the gear selector assembly.

   Locate the gear selector assembly/shuttle lever. Disconnect the main wiring harness connector from the switch.

   Unplug the electrical connection to the faulty switch.

   Remove the mounting hardware (typically bolts or an E-ring) securing the transmission control lever assembly to the column, and pull the old unit out.

   Detach the old shuttle lever from the steering column.

   Install the new transmission control lever switch and secure it with the mounting hardware.

   Mount the replacement switch assembly into place.

   Reconnect the wiring harness securely.

   Ensure the electrical connector is fully seated.

   Reinstall the steering column covers and the steering wheel.

   Put the plastic panels and steering wheel back in their original positions.

   Turn the key switch to the ON position and verify that the warning/indicator lights illuminate and turn off as designed, and that the gear display now accurately reflects the lever's position without throwing the 520645-31 fault code.

   Test the new switch to confirm the repair is successful and the fault code is cleared.
