Case IH 520646-03 - VCM – VCM: Transmission control lever position switch disagreement

Issue description

The control module is receiving illogical, conflicting, or shorted high-voltage signals from the different position sensors inside the gear selector switch.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 200 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 220 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 240 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 250 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 280 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 340 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 380 AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Check the transmission control lever (FNRP shifter) for physical damage, binding, or debris that might prevent it from fully engaging a position.

  2. Access the FNRP module test points and measure the voltage at the transmission control lever connector (expects specific voltage readings, e.g., 12 volts, when in Park or Neutral).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission control lever to the VCM for pinched wires, corrosion, or short circuits to battery power.

  4. Verify the operation of the neutral switch specifically, as related VCM codes indicate low voltage on the neutral switch circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, move the transmission control lever to the Park position, chock the wheels, and turn off the engine and ignition.

  2. Remove the Steering Wheel

Remove the steering wheel to gain unobstructed access to the steering column components.

  3. Remove Column Covers

Take off the plastic steering column shrouds/covers.

  4. Extract the Assembly

Locate the gear selector assembly (FNRP shifter) on the column. Unbolt the assembly and carefully pull it out.

  5. Disconnect Wiring

Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the faulty gear selector switch.

  6. Install New Part

Plug the wiring harness into the new gear selector switch and mount it to the steering column.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the steering column covers and securely reattach the steering wheel.

  8. Calibration/Testing

Turn on the tractor, clear the VCM fault codes, and cycle the lever through all positions (Forward, Neutral, Reverse, Park) to ensure the VCM reads the correct position without disagreement.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Control Lever / Gear Selector Switch / FNRP Shifter Controller
