Case IH 520646-04 - VCM – VCM: Transmission control lever neutral switch voltage low
Issue description
This condition occurs when the signal voltage from the neutral position switch on the transmission control lever (often referred to as the FNR shifter) drops below the acceptable operational threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed neutral switch, or a low system battery voltage.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum 400 AFS Connect
Check the cause
Test battery and system voltage (should be between 12 to 14 volts). If low, test alternator output to determine if it is charging properly.
Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission control lever (FNR shifter) and the VCM for chafed wires, broken pins, or bent connectors that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.
With the key switch in the ON position, measure the voltage at the transmission control lever neutral switch connector to verify if the switch is receiving proper reference voltage from the module.
Check VCM connections to ensure the CAN network cables are intact and that the VCM is receiving proper voltage supply.
Repair steps
Park and shut off machine
Park the tractor on level ground, place the transmission control lever in the PARK/NEUTRAL position, and shut off the engine.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair procedure.
Access transmission control lever
Access the transmission control lever (FNR shifter controller) located on the operator's armrest/side console.
Disconnect wiring harness
Carefully disconnect the wiring harness connector from the transmission control lever switch.
Remove mounting fasteners
Remove the mounting fasteners securing the transmission control lever/joystick assembly to the console.
Replace switch or assembly
Replace the faulty neutral switch or the entire FNR shifter controller assembly, depending on how the part is serviced for your specific cab configuration.
Reinstall hardware and reconnect harness
Reinstall the mounting hardware and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear codes and calibrate
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and clear the fault codes using the diagnostic display. If the entire transmission controller/lever was replaced, you may need to perform a transmission valve/clutch calibration procedure via the diagnostic display.
