Case IH 5212 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Left Joystick Forward-Back Axis Pin A Shorted To Power

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from Pin A of the left joystick's forward/reverse axis sensor that is higher than the normal operating range, indicating the signal wire is shorted to a power source (such as a 5V reference line or 12V battery voltage).

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • TR270
  • TR310
  • TR320

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the base of the left joystick to the UCM for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could bridge the Pin A signal wire to a power wire.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the left joystick, turn the key ON, and check for voltage on the Pin A terminal on the harness side to isolate a harness short.

  3. If no voltage is present on the disconnected harness signal wire, the internal sensor of the left joystick has failed and is shorting the signal internally.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare machine

Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Remove console covers

Remove the left-hand console covers and trim pieces to access the base and mounting hardware of the left joystick.

  3. Disconnect joystick

Disconnect the main electrical connector for the left joystick.

  4. Repair wiring harness

If a harness issue was found: Trace the wire for Pin A, locate the short, and repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using appropriate automotive-grade wire and heat-shrink connectors.

  5. Remove mounting bolts

If the joystick is faulty: Remove the mounting bolts securing the joystick base to the console bracket.

  6. Remove old joystick

Remove the old joystick assembly from the cab.

  7. Install new joystick

Install the new OEM joystick and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  8. Reconnect electrical connector

Reconnect the electrical connector to the new joystick.

  9. Reinstall covers

Reinstall the console covers and trim.

  10. Verify repair

Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and verify that fault code 5212 is no longer active. Note: A joystick calibration procedure via the instrument cluster or dealer service tool may be required after replacing the EH joystick.
