Case IH 5215 – Universal Control Module (UCM) / Instrument Cluster (IC) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Left Joystick Forward-Back Axis Pin B Shorted To Power

Issue description

The machine's control system has detected that the electrical signal coming from Pin B on the Forward-Back (FB) axis sensor of the left-hand joystick is shorted directly to a power source. This prevents the machine from accurately reading the operator's forward or reverse inputs.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR200
  • SR210
  • SR250
  • TR320
  • TV380

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the base of the left joystick and wiring harness for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that could bridge the Pin B wire to a 12V power supply.

  2. Disconnect the left joystick harness and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could cause a short across the pins.

  3. With the joystick disconnected, use a digital multimeter to check for voltage on the machine-side harness at Pin B. If voltage is present, the short to power is in the machine's wiring harness.

  4. If the machine-side harness tests fine (no short to power), the short is internal to the left joystick's Forward-Back axis sensor, meaning the joystick assembly must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine, lower the loader arms (if possible), and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Access the Joystick

Remove the left-hand control panel or boot to access the base and wiring of the left joystick.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the left joystick.

  4. Removal

Remove the mounting hardware securing the joystick. OEM diagrams note a locking Hex Socket Screw (#10-32 x 5/8") and an M12 x 1.75 (Class 8) Hex Nut securing the rod/base.

  5. Replacement

Install the new left joystick grip/assembly and tighten the mounting hardware.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the protective boot or panel.

  7. Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Perform a 'Left joystick calibration' procedure using the electronic service tool (EST) so the control module can learn the new joystick's neutral, maximum forward, and maximum reverse parameters.
