Case IH 5217:
Applies to these machines
1 machine- skid steer
Check the cause
Check the left joystick for physical damage, binding, or debris that might be preventing the handle from springing back to the absolute dead-center neutral position.
Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the base of the left joystick. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires between the joystick and the UCM.
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor the live voltage/percentage of the left joystick's forward-back axis. Move the joystick forward and backward and release it. The signal should smoothly transition and return to a steady neutral value. If the value jumps erratically or fails to return to the exact neutral baseline, the sensor is failing.
Attempt to recalibrate the joysticks using the EST or the advanced instrument cluster display. If the joystick fails calibration, the internal sensor is faulty and the assembly must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Joystick
Remove the screws securing the left-hand control console/armrest cover to expose the base of the joystick assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the main electrical harness connector from the bottom of the joystick.
Removal
Remove the mounting bolts (usually 3 or 4) securing the joystick base to the console bracket. Pull the old joystick assembly out.
Installation
Seat the new joystick assembly into the console bracket and tighten the mounting bolts.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness into the new joystick. Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.
Reassembly
Reinstall the left-hand control console cover and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
You must calibrate the new joystick using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the instrument cluster diagnostic menu so the UCM can learn the new sensor's exact neutral, maximum forward, and maximum reverse voltage values.
