Case IH 5221 – Vehicle Control Module: Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Solenoid Raise (A) Supply Open Circuit
Issue description
The machine's control system has detected a break in the electrical circuit (an "open circuit") supplying power to the "Raise" solenoid (Solenoid A) on the directional control valve for the loader arm. This means the electrical signal is not reaching the solenoid coil, or the coil itself has burnt out and broken internally, preventing the loader arms from raising.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the 'Raise' (A) solenoid for severed wires, severe chafing, or rodent damage
Unplug the electrical connector at the solenoid and check for pushed-out pins, heavy corrosion, or moisture inside the plug
Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the solenoid coil (a reading of 'OL' indicates a broken internal coil)
Perform a voltage test with the connector unplugged, key ON, and joystick commanded to 'Raise' to verify the controller and harness are delivering power
Repair steps
Safety First
Lower the loader arms completely to the ground. If the arms must be raised to access the valve block (which is typically located under the cab), you MUST engage the mechanical loader arm lock/strut. Turn off the engine and relieve all hydraulic pressure.
Access the Valve
Unbolt and tilt the cab forward (if required on your specific model) to access the main hydraulic control valve block.
Disconnect
Locate the Loader Arm Raise (A) solenoid on the directional valve. Unplug the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid
Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem that holds the solenoid coil in place. Carefully slide the old solenoid coil off the valve spool cartridge.
Install the New Solenoid
Slide the replacement solenoid coil over the valve stem. Install the retaining nut and tighten it securely (do not overtighten, as this can crush the plastic coil housing).
Reconnect and Test
Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid until the locking tab clicks. Lower and secure the cab. Start the machine, clear the stored fault codes, and test the loader arm raise function to ensure code 5221 does not return.
