Case IH 5222 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Solenoid Raise (A) Supply Shorted To Ground
Issue description
The electrical supply circuit that provides power to the solenoid responsible for raising the loader arm has shorted to the machine's chassis ground. This means the voltage is finding a premature path to ground before reaching or properly passing through the solenoid coil, which will disable the loader arm's ability to raise and trigger a critical (Red) warning.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the loader arm directional control valve block for pinched wires, rubbed-through insulation, or bare copper touching the metal frame.
Disconnect the harness at the Raise (A) solenoid and at the UCM. Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity between the Raise (A) supply wire and the chassis ground.
Measure the resistance of the Raise (A) solenoid coil and compare it to the Lower (B) solenoid coil. If the resistance is near zero, the coil is internally shorted.
Check the electrical connectors at the valve block for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the supply voltage to a ground pin.
Repair steps
Safely Secure the Machine
Lower the loader arms to the ground. If they cannot be lowered, ensure they are securely supported by approved mechanical safety struts. Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Valve
Access the main hydraulic directional control valve block and identify the Raise (A) solenoid.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the wiring harness, cut out the damaged section of the wire and repair it using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Replace Solenoid
If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, disconnect its electrical plug. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the replacement coil. Torque the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specification (do not overtighten, or you may crush the coil).
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Power on the machine and test the loader arm raise function. Clear the fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST), or verify if the code clears actively upon successful operation.
