522831-03 - PCM

Case IH 522831-03 - PCM – PCM: HSD output-2 short circuit to battery or overvoltage

Issue description

The controller is detecting voltage on the HSD output 2 circuit when it is not actively commanding it. This indicates that the circuit is shorted to a 12V power source (a "pre-fire short"), or the system voltage exceeds the safe operating threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum AFS Connect
  • Magnum 400 AFS Connect
  • Case IH Steiger AFS Connect

Check the cause

  1. Verify the vehicle's overall charging system voltage to rule out a general overvoltage condition caused by a faulty alternator.

  2. Locate the PCM and identify the J1 connector (the vehicle harness connector), which houses the High-Side Driver (HSD) outputs.

  3. Disconnect the J1 connector and perform a continuity test between the ECU pin for HSD output 2 and battery positive. Continuity indicates a short to battery in the wiring harness.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could bridge the HSD output 2 wire to a 12V source.

  5. Check the specific load/component driven by HSD output 2 for internal shorts to voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

  2. Wait 2 to 5 minutes before disconnecting the batteries.

This allows the PCM to save data and the DEF system to purge properly.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  4. Access the PCM and disconnect the J1 vehicle harness connector.

  5. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

    Clean or repair as necessary.

  6. Trace the circuit for HSD output 2 from the J1 connector to the load.

Repair or replace any section of the wiring harness that is shorted to battery power.

  7. If the wiring is intact, test the load component.

Replace the component if it is internally shorted.

  8. If the wiring and load are both functioning correctly, the internal High-Side Driver within the PCM may be permanently damaged, requiring replacement of the PCM itself.

  9. Reconnect the J1 connector and the battery.

Power on the machine and clear the fault codes to verify the repair.

Parts you might need
