Case IH 522833-06 - PCM – PCM: Remote output short circuit to ground

Issue description

This code indicates that the electrical circuit for the remote/auxiliary device output has an unintended path to ground. This short circuit prevents the module from properly controlling the remote output and can cause the circuit to disable itself to prevent electrical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Fault: Check the AFS Pro 1200 display to see if the code is active or stored. If stored, clear it to see if it returns immediately (indicating a hard short) or intermittently (indicating wire chafing during movement).

  2. Isolate the Component: Disconnect the auxiliary/remote device that the PCM is outputting to. If the fault changes from 'short to ground' to 'open circuit,' the short is internal to the remote device.

  3. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the PCM to the remote output connection. Look for pinch points, chafing against the tractor chassis, or melted insulation.

  4. Connector Check: Inspect the PCM connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins which could bridge the output pin to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor ignition and switch off the main battery disconnect to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the PCM

    Access the Processing & Connectivity Module (typically located in the cab roof or behind the interior trim, depending on the specific tractor model).

  3. Test the Circuit

    Disconnect the harness from the PCM. Using a digital multimeter set to Ohms (Ω), probe the specific remote output pin on the harness connector and the other lead to a known good chassis ground.

  4. Trace the Short

    If the multimeter shows continuity (low resistance) to ground, there is a short in the wiring. Trace the harness back toward the remote output destination, wiggling the harness to see if the resistance changes.

  5. Repair Wiring

    Once the chafed or damaged wire is found, cut out the damaged section, splice in a new wire using weather-sealed crimp connectors, and re-loom the harness.

  6. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and the remote device is not shorted, the internal driver inside the PCM has likely failed and shorted to ground internally. The PCM will need to be replaced and provisioned by a dealer.

  7. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reconnect the PCM and battery. Turn the key on, navigate to the diagnostics menu on the AFS display, and clear the fault codes. Test the remote output functionality to ensure the repair was successful.
