522839-02 - PCM

Case IH 522839-02 - PCM – PCM: CAN-4 data erratic, intermittent or incorrect.

Issue description

This indicates a communication failure on the CAN-4 (Controller Area Network 4) bus. The control module is detecting unstable, missing, or corrupted data packets on this specific network branch. Depending on the machine's architecture, CAN-4 is typically utilized for the Implement Bus (operating at 250 kbps) or for specific engine/emissions communications (such as ECU to D-NOX module communication).

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum AFS Connect series (Models 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, 400)
  • Steiger and Quadtrac AFS Connect series
  • Austoft 9900 Cane Harvesters
  • Older Case IH models retrofitted with the Case IH Pro 1200 Guidance Kit

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the CAN-4 wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or loose connections.

  2. Check the CAN-4 High and CAN-4 Low pins for proper voltage and continuity. On standard diagnostic/implement connectors, these are often located at Pin H (CAN 4 HI) and Pin J (CAN 4 LO), or Pins 23 and 24 depending on the specific harness interface.

  3. Verify that the CAN network terminators (resistors) are intact and functioning properly, as missing or failed terminators will cause erratic data.

  4. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the PCM software version and check if any specific nodes on the CAN-4 network are dropping offline.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port. Read the bus statistics to determine if the erratic data is caused by a specific implement/module on the CAN-4 bus or the wiring itself.

  2. Harness Repair

If continuity tests reveal an open circuit, short to ground, or short to power on the CAN-4 lines, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

  3. Module Replacement

If the wiring, terminators, and connected modules test good but the PCM still fails to process CAN-4 data, the PCM itself has an internal hardware fault and must be replaced.

  4. Reprogramming

If the PCM is replaced, it must be programmed. Use the EST base software to copy the complete program files for the display and the new PCM onto a USB memory device. Insert the USB drive into the display to flash and configure the new PCM.
