Case IH 5232 – Universal Control Module (UCM): Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Solenoid Lower (B) Supply Shorted To Ground

Issue description

The electrical supply circuit that provides power to the "Lower" directional solenoid (Solenoid B) on the loader arm control valve has a short circuit to ground. The voltage intended to activate the solenoid is finding a direct path to the chassis ground, which prevents the loader arm from lowering properly and can potentially damage the driver circuit or blow a fuse.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Universal Control Module (UCM) to the loader arm directional valve for pinched wires, chafing against the metal chassis, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Loader Arm Valve Solenoid (Lower B) and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or debris that could bridge the supply pin to ground.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the solenoid coil itself. Check for continuity between the supply pin on the solenoid and the metal housing of the valve to identify an internal short.

  4. With both the UCM and the solenoid disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the harness supply wire and the chassis ground to isolate a short in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Safely park the machine on level ground. Lower the loader arm completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. If the arm cannot be lowered due to the fault, secure it mechanically with approved OEM safety struts. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the loader arm directional control valve block and identify the specific solenoid responsible for the "Lower" (B) function.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the Lower (B) solenoid.

  4. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed, heat-shrink butt connectors. Wrap the repair in protective wire loom.

  5. Solenoid Replacement

    If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut or clip holding the coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the new OEM replacement coil. Secure the retaining nut/clip.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid, ensuring the weather seal is seated properly.

  7. Testing

    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored 5232 fault code from the UCM using an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the instrument cluster interface, and test the loader arm lower function to verify the repair.
