523390 - 31 - CSM

Case IH 523390 - 31 - CSM – CSM (Cab Suspension Module): Cab suspension controller - cab suspension controller communication error

Issue description

Total loss of CAN bus communication with the module, or an internal communication failure within the controller itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 180
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 200
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 220
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 240
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 250
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 280
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 310
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 340
  • AFS Connect Magnum Series 380
  • Optum CVXDrive Series
  • Puma Series
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the dedicated fuses and relays for the cab suspension system to verify the CSM is receiving proper 12V power and has a clean, secure ground connection.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the CSM for chafed wires, pinched cables under the cab, or damage from debris.

  3. Disconnect the CSM and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins that could cause an open circuit.

  4. Using a multimeter, check the CAN High and CAN Low lines at the CSM connector. You should see approximately 60 ohms of resistance across the CAN lines. Check for shorts to ground or shorts to power.

  5. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if the CSM is visible on the network. If the EST cannot communicate with the CSM but other modules are online, the CSM is likely internally faulted.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the CSM

The module is typically mounted under the cab floor or behind the rear cab trim panels (refer to the specific model's service manual for exact placement).

  3. Repair Wiring

If the CAN lines or power wires tested bad, repair the break in the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed splices.

  4. Replace the CSM

Unplug the main harness connector from the CSM. Remove the mounting bolts securing the module to the cab frame. Install the new CSM and tighten the mounting hardware. Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  5. Flash and Calibrate

Reconnect battery power. Connect the Case IH EST. You must flash the correct software to the new CSM and perform the Cab Suspension Calibration procedure so the module can learn the suspension travel limits and sensor baselines.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the 523390 - 31 fault code and test drive the tractor to ensure the suspension operates smoothly and the code does not return.
