Case IH 523455 - 09 - CSM – CSM (Cab Suspension Module): Abnormal Update Rate / Loss of Communication on CAN bus with Cab Suspension Module (CSM)

Issue description

The Vehicle Controller has lost its CAN bus communication signal with the Cab Suspension Module (CSM), or the messages being broadcast by the CSM are timing out before reaching the vehicle controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines between the CSM and the Vehicle Controller for continuity.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the CSM for chafing, pinch points (especially near the cab suspension pivot points where movement occurs), or rodent damage.

  3. Disconnect the CSM and Vehicle Controller connectors to check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  4. Verify the software version on the CSM (outdated software can cause communication drops).

  5. Measure the resistance across the CAN bus network to ensure the terminating resistors are intact (should typically read ~60 ohms).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes during module handling.

  2. Access the CSM

    Locate the Cab Suspension Module (typically mounted under the cab floor or within the rear cab electrical compartment, depending on the specific tractor model).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic continuity test revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, splice and repair the damaged section of the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

  4. Clean Connections

    Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the CSM harness connectors and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness and power/ground supplies to the CSM test perfectly, the CSM itself has likely suffered an internal failure. Unbolt the faulty module, install the replacement CSM, and reconnect the harness.

  6. Reprogramming

    A new CSM will require flashing and calibration using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to pair it with the Vehicle Controller.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, cycle the key, and use the EST to clear the inactive 523455 - 09 fault code. Test the cab suspension functionality.
