Case IH 524 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Error detected on high speed governor droop selection switch

Issue description

The engine's control system has detected an electrical fault (such as an open circuit, short, or out-of-range voltage) on the input circuit for the high-speed governor (HSG) droop selection switch. The operator cannot select alternate high-speed governor droop profiles and the engine will automatically default to the normal droop setting.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum series
  • Magnum NA Models (215, 245, 275, 305, 335)
  • Magnum EU Models (225, 250, 280, 310, 335)
  • T8000 series
  • CX Series Excavators (CX210, CX240)
  • Cummins QSB 6.7
  • Cummins ISC
  • 8.3L / 9L / 15L electronic engines

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine harness between the ECM and the droop selection switch for chafed wires, corrosion, or pushed-back pins at the connectors.

  2. Identify the specific input pin for the droop selection switch on the ECM (commonly Pin 24 or Pin 26 on the engine harness connector) and test this circuit for continuity to the switch.

  3. Check the switch signal wire for a short to ground, a short to voltage, or an open circuit.

  4. Disconnect the high-speed governor droop selection switch and test it with a multimeter to verify that the switch opens and closes the circuit properly when toggled.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn the key off and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes while working on the ECM circuits.

  2. Access the Switch and ECM

Locate the droop selection switch in the cab/operator station and the ECM on the side of the engine.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed high resistance, an open, or a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the damaged connector pins.

  4. Replace the Switch

If the wiring tests good but the switch fails the continuity test, remove the defective switch from the console/dash and install a new one.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect all harness connectors securely. Reconnect the battery ground.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the key on and use a diagnostic scan tool (or the machine's onboard instrument cluster diagnostic mode) to clear the inactive ENG 524 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return when the switch is operated.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • High Speed Governor Droop Selection Switch

Look up using the specific machine's Product Identification Number (PIN) in the Case IH electronic parts catalog.

  • Engine Wiring Harness

    If the fault is harness-related.
