Case IH 524032-23 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Controller: Trailer brake controller internal fault
Issue description
The module's internal self-diagnostics have detected a critical hardware failure, memory error, or logic malfunction within the controller itself. When this occurs, the system cannot guarantee the safe or proper operation of the automated trailer braking system and will typically disable the feature or default to a safe mode.

Check the cause
Check the power supply to the ITBV by verifying the two primary 15A fuses (permanent battery power and switched battery power) are intact and the module is receiving proper voltage.
Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connectors at the ITBV for corrosion, moisture intrusion, bent pins, or wire chafing.
Verify the integrity of the CAN high and CAN low communication lines between the ITBV and the main vehicle controller.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for available software updates for the ITBV, clear the fault code, and cycle the ignition to see if the code returns as an active hard fault.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Depressurize the System
Safely relieve all pneumatic air pressure from the air reservoirs and hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake lines.
Disconnect Electricals
Locate the ITBV assembly (typically mounted near the rear axle/transmission housing) and carefully unplug the main electrical harness connectors.
Disconnect Lines
Mark and disconnect the pneumatic and hydraulic lines routed to the ITBV block (e.g., the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube). Cap the lines to prevent contamination.
Removal
Unbolt the ITBV assembly from its lower mounting bracket and remove the faulty unit from the tractor.
Installation
Mount the new ITBV assembly to the bracket and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect all pneumatic/hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition on. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct software to the new ITBV and calibrate it to the tractor's CAN network.
Testing
Start the tractor, allow the pneumatic system to build pressure, and perform a functional test of the trailer brakes. Check all fittings for air/fluid leaks.
