Case IH 524034-31 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault
Issue description
The internal circuitry or software of the trailer brake controller has failed, which may be accompanied by internal checksum errors and communication faults with the vehicle controller.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH tractors equipped with MTA and CCM / APH Stage V MR
- Case IH Farmall 40, 45, and 50
- Case IH Magnum 235 - 340
Check the cause
Verify if codes for 'Trailer Brake Controller Communication Fault with Vehicle Controller' are present.
Check the Service Brake Sensor voltages to ensure there are no 'Short to Power' or 'Short to Ground' faults at the brake sensor supply or the Inlet Valve (IV).
Verify the TCV pressure sensor output is not shorted to power, shorted to ground, or disconnected.
Check the brake pedal output plausibility (e.g., ensure the brake switch isn't reading low while demand pressure is reading high).
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault stack via the diagnostic connection. Cycle the key to see if the internal fault or checksum errors (Parameters 1, 2, or 3) return immediately.
Harness Inspection
Disconnect the ITBV module. Inspect the harness connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins that could cause a short circuit mimicking an internal failure.
Module Replacement
If power, ground, and CAN communication lines test good, and the 'Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault' remains active, the ITBV module has suffered a non-serviceable internal hardware or software failure and must be replaced.
Installation and Calibration
Remove the faulty ITBV and install the replacement. The new module must be calibrated to the tractor's CCM/Vehicle Controller to resolve any communication or checksum errors.
Parts you might need
(1)Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) / Trailer Brake Controller
Must be verified against the specific tractor's serial number (e.g., Stage V MR, Farmall CVT, or Magnum) as the internal software parameters and checksums are specific to the vehicle controller it communicates with.
