Case IH 524035-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) / Trailer Brake Control Module: Trailer brake controller internal fault
Issue description
The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) has detected an internal logic, memory, or processing failure that prevents it from safely operating the trailer brakes.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Farmall Series (e.g., 115U Efficient Power)
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Optum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
Check the cause
Check the ITBV software version using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Ensure the module is flashed to at least software version 1.3.0.0 (or the latest OEM release) as internal faults are frequently caused by software glitches.
Verify the power supply to the ITBV. Check the 15A fuses for both the switched battery power supply and the permanent battery power supply, as a voltage drop during shutdown can trigger this fault.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ITBV to the main tractor CAN bus. Look for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins at the module connector.
Use the Case IH EST to clear the fault code. Cycle the tractor's key and perform a trailer brake engagement test to see if the code is a hard fault or an intermittent glitch.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Relieve Pressure
Depress the brake pedals several times to relieve any residual hydraulic or pneumatic pressure in the trailer brake circuit.
Locate the ITBV
Locate the ITBV assembly, which is typically mounted near the rear axle housing, transmission, or adjacent to the pneumatic reservoirs.
Disconnect Electrical
Carefully unplug the main electrical harness connector from the ITBV module.
Disconnect Lines
Mark and disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines (e.g., the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube). Cap all lines and ports immediately to prevent fluid loss and system contamination.
Removal
Remove the mounting bolts securing the ITBV to the chassis bracket and remove the valve assembly.
Installation
Mount the new ITBV assembly and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect the hydraulic/pneumatic lines and plug in the electrical harness.
System Bleeding/Testing
Reconnect the battery. If the system is hydraulic, bleed the trailer brake circuit.
Calibration
Connect the Case IH EST. The new ITBV module will likely need to be configured/calibrated to the tractor's CAN network to clear any configuration errors and ensure proper communication with the Vehicle Controller.
